Face-Closure Timing Explained
The phrase we use most often on the bench, and the one variable torque is actually controlling underneath every other fitting decision.
Every golf swing rotates the clubface open on the backswing and closed through the downswing. Where that rotation lands relative to the moment of impact — open, square, or closed — determines starting direction more than almost any other single factor. We call the point where the face reaches square "face-closure timing," and it's the practical outcome that shaft torque, grip, and swing mechanics are all fighting to control together.
Why Timing, Not Just Angle, Matters
A face that's technically square to the target line at address means little if it isn't square at impact. Two golfers can share an identical grip and setup and still produce very different face angles at impact because their release — the speed and point at which the wrists and forearms rotate the clubhead through the ball — differs.
Face-closure timing describes where in the downswing that rotation catches up to square. Release the club too early relative to your tempo, and the face can close past square before impact, producing a hook or pull. Release too late, and the face may still be open at impact, producing a slice or push.
Where Shaft Torque Fits In
The shaft itself twists slightly during the downswing as the clubhead lags behind the hands, then untwists as it releases into the ball. That twist-and-release is a physical delay layered on top of your body's own rotation. A low-torque shaft resists this twist and releases more predictably, which tends to produce an earlier, more repeatable face-square for players with a faster, more aggressive downswing. A higher-torque shaft twists more, adding a fuller release that smoother, more tempo-driven swings often benefit from.
Torque doesn't create your release pattern — it either supports the timing you already have, or fights against it on every single swing.
Why This Gets Missed in a Standard Fitting
A fitting built around flex alone assumes that stiffness is the only variable shaping your release, and treats every "Stiff" shaft as functionally identical. Because torque isn't standardized or clearly labeled the way flex is, two shafts that test as the same flex can produce measurably different face-closure timing for the same swing.
