Reading a Shaft Spec Sheet the Right Way
Torque, flex, weight, and material each shape how a shaft performs — but torque is the one most spec sheets bury in fine print, even though it decides when your face actually squares up. Here's what each number means once you're on the bench.
The Number That Controls Face-Closure Timing
Torque measures how many degrees a shaft twists around its own axis under a fixed load — in practice, how much it twists as clubhead lag releases into the ball. Lower torque resists that twist, which tends to produce an earlier, more repeatable face-square for faster, more aggressive tempos. Higher torque twists more readily, adding feel and a fuller release that smoother tempos often prefer.
Get the pairing backwards and the shaft either won't release in time — leaving the face open at impact — or it releases too early and closes the face past square. Both show up as a directional miss that no amount of loft or lie adjustment will fully correct.

Two Different Numbers, Often Confused as One
Flex
Describes overall bend stiffness across the shaft's length. Flex ratings (Senior, Regular, Stiff, Extra Stiff) aren't standardized between manufacturers, so a "Stiff" label alone doesn't tell you much on its own.
Torque
Describes rotational twist around the shaft's axis, independent of how much it bends. Two shafts with an identical flex letter can carry meaningfully different torque numbers.
Why Both Matter
Flex sets how the shaft loads and unloads through the swing; torque sets how much it twists while doing so. A fitting that only checks flex is only half the picture.
How Steel, Graphite, and Weight Interact With Torque
Steel shafts typically run lower torque and higher weight, which suits players who prioritize control and consistent feedback — the standard choice for most iron and wedge shafts. Graphite shafts generally run higher torque and lower weight, favoring players who benefit from added clubhead speed and vibration dampening.
Shaft weight interacts with torque more than most golfers expect: a lighter shaft at the same torque rating tends to twist more readily during the swing, while a heavier shaft at that same torque rating resists twist more, playing firmer with more control.
