Reading a Torque Rating Correctly

The torque number on a spec sheet is useful, but only in context. Here's how to read it without over- or under-weighting what it's actually telling you.

Torque ratings usually show up as a single number followed by a degree symbol, somewhere between roughly 2 and 6 degrees on most driver and fairway wood shafts. Iron and wedge shafts, being shorter and generally steel, tend to run lower and are sometimes left off consumer-facing spec sheets entirely. On their own, these numbers don't mean much — they only become useful once you know what they're being compared against.

Torque Ranges, In Practical Terms

Shafts under roughly 3.2 degrees are generally considered low-torque, favoring players with a fast, aggressive downswing who benefit from resistance to twist. Shafts in the 3.3 to 4.4 degree range sit in a middle band suited to a wide range of moderate tempos. Shafts above 4.5 degrees run higher-torque, generally suiting smoother, slower tempos that benefit from a fuller release and softer feel.

These bands are a starting reference, not a rule. A player with a fast transition but a smooth overall tempo can still test better in a mid-torque shaft than the "fast swing, low torque" shorthand would suggest.

The Mistake of Chasing the Lowest Number

Because low torque is often marketed alongside "tour-level" and "stability," some players assume lower is always better. In practice, a shaft with less torque than your release pattern calls for can leave the face open at impact just as reliably as one with too much torque closes it early. Torque isn't a ranking from worse to better; it's a spec to be matched, the same way shoe size isn't ranked from small to large.

The Mistake of Ignoring It Entirely

The opposite error is treating torque as a minor footnote next to flex. Because torque isn't standardized across brands the way flex letters attempt to be, two shafts with the same flex rating and a meaningfully different torque number can produce different dispersion patterns for the exact same swing — the kind of variable a fitting session is built to catch.

How to Use the Number Going Forward

Treat a published torque rating as a starting filter, not a final answer. It narrows the shafts worth testing against your tempo, but the actual fit still comes from watching your face angle and dispersion change as torque is adjusted on the bench — not from the number printed on the wrapper.
