Tempo Bands and Torque Fit

Swing speed gets most of the attention in a fitting conversation. Tempo — the rhythm and ratio of your backswing to downswing — is the number that actually predicts a workable torque range.

Two golfers can share an identical clubhead speed and still need very different shaft torque specs, because speed alone doesn't describe how a swing gets there. Tempo — measured as the ratio of time spent in the backswing versus the downswing — captures something speed misses: how abruptly or smoothly the transition happens, and how much time the shaft has to load and release before impact.

Why We Measure Tempo Separately From Speed

A player with a quick, compact transition and a player with a long, languid one can post the same ball speed on the monitor while placing very different demands on a shaft. The quicker transition asks more of the shaft's ability to resist twist under a sudden load; the slower one gives the shaft more time to release naturally. Tempo, not speed, is what actually predicts which end of the torque range a given player should be testing.

Three Practical Tempo Bands

We generally sort players into three rough tempo bands during a fitting, understanding that these are starting points rather than fixed categories. Quick-transition players, with a shorter backswing-to- downswing ratio, tend to test better in lower-torque shafts that resist twist through an abrupt transition. Moderate-tempo players cover the widest range and often test well across a mid-torque band. Smooth-tempo players, with a longer, more unhurried transition, frequently prefer higher-torque shafts that add feel and a fuller release without sacrificing control.

Tempo doesn't dictate torque on its own — it narrows the range worth testing, which is a meaningfully faster starting point than guessing from a swing-speed chart alone.

Where This Breaks Down

Tempo banding is a starting filter, not a substitute for testing. Grip pressure, wrist action, and even how a player was taught to release the club can shift the ideal torque outside what tempo alone would predict. That's why every fitting still ends with live testing against face angle and dispersion, not a lookup table.
