Torque vs. Flex: The Two Numbers
Most golfers treat flex and torque as one spec. They're measuring two different physical properties, and mixing them up is where a lot of fittings quietly go wrong.
Ask a golfer what their shaft spec is and you'll almost always hear a flex letter back — Regular, Stiff, Extra Stiff. Ask about torque and most players draw a blank, even though it's printed on the same spec sheet. That's not an accident of marketing; it's because flex is the easier number to explain in a single word, while torque requires a bit more context to make sense of.
What Flex Actually Measures
Flex describes how much a shaft bends along its length under load — specifically, how much it deflects when weight is applied near the tip while the butt end is held fixed. It's a bending measurement, and it's not standardized across manufacturers, which is why a "Stiff" shaft from one brand can play differently from a "Stiff" shaft from another.
What Torque Actually Measures
Torque describes something separate: how many degrees the shaft twists around its own axis when a fixed rotational force is applied at the tip. It has nothing to do with how much the shaft bends forward and back — it's measuring resistance to twisting, a completely different axis of motion.
Because these are independent measurements, two shafts can share an identical flex rating while carrying meaningfully different torque numbers — sometimes a full degree or more apart, which is enough to noticeably change how the face behaves through impact.
Why Both Numbers Matter Together
Flex determines how the shaft loads and unloads energy through the swing, contributing to launch and feel. Torque determines how much twist accompanies that loading and unloading, contributing directly to face angle at impact. A fitting that checks only flex is optimizing for feel and launch while leaving directional consistency to chance.
Flex tells you how the shaft bends. Torque tells you how it twists. A complete fitting checks both, not one standing in for the other.
How to Read a Spec Sheet Going Forward
When comparing two shafts, look at torque and flex as separate line items, not a combined rating. A lower torque number generally means a more stable, earlier-releasing shaft; a higher torque number generally means more feel and a fuller release. Neither is universally "better" — the right number depends entirely on your own tempo and release pattern, which is what a proper fitting measures.
